Ahead of marking his sixth anniversary in charge, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his future at Arsenal is directly connected to delivering trophies.

Reflecting on: From Appointment to Present

The former Arsenal captain assumed control on December 20th, 2019 and soon guided the team to an cup win not long after. Yet, that initial silverware is still his lone top-tier trophy following the departure of Unai Emery.

“I can,” he stated when questioned about staying beyond 2027. “Yet it's about today. And many things must occur in the coming months as well to earn the right.”

This weekend sees the anniversary with a game facing Everton, the very same club Arsenal met immediately following his role was made public.

Present Challenges

Given that chasing Manchester City taking on West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal face being knocked off the summit in the Premier League before their own match begins. This situation arises even with Arteta managing a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues over the course of last season.

He is tied down by a year and a half left on the contract he inked in 2024, however, he knows that he must deliver in the immediate future.

Earning the Right

He went on to explain, stressing the constant necessity to prove his worth. “My belief is that a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you address the media, how you enter the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He added, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the board and owners, but pinpointing the players' commitment as most crucial. “Ultimately, the key individuals are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The squad faces the Everton match dealing with yet another injury. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a muscle problem that is anticipated to see him miss action for a few weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Even with the injury crisis and the intense pressure, Arteta feels the club's “focus and dialogue” are vastly different from when he initially took over.

Arteta highlighted the squad's displays as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Consider the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the level we are at.”

In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
