Sir Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not seeking a return to football management, noting that it would be tough to duplicate the higher calling he encountered as England’s manager.

The former coach expressed his plan to dedicate his efforts toward engaging the next generation and combating what he described as a dominant downbeat story now found in the country.

Embracing Fresh Opportunities Beyond Football

Speaking on air, Southgate was asked about rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the Premier League and other leagues.

“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he responded. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

Commitment to Role Models

Leading up to the publication of his upcoming book, his leadership-focused book, Southgate emphasized that he is “very passionate” about setting examples for teenagers, applying insights from his period as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

He believes that his experience leading the national team, during which the team evolved from being widely disliked to widely supported, holds general lessons.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he explained. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Parenting and Influencing Youth

Reflecting on his role as a parent, the coach commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Unity Over Conflict

Southgate stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the public discourse often highlights conflict.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he stated. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

His upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is expected to provide further insights on leadership and public spirit drawn from his remarkable career.
