Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
