Israelis have come together across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.

The attack led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.

He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership delayed formal memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but events still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was organized in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the plan.

A prominent delegate involved in the negotiations said that an evening round of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.

The source stated the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.

He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.

Essential Matters in Discussions

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies provision
  • Future governance of the area

Public Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose family member endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "No location appears as home anymore and until all the hostages are released none of us will have peace of mind."

"When we see everyone home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to show their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev stated: "We need do any agreement needed for the abducted to come back home. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of Israelis prefer the war to conclude in exchange for the release of the hostages.

Palestinian Conditions

At the site of the gathering, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.

From the site, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality districts and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"As the night falls, the dread appears with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.

"We are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are resting together, clinging, especially my little child who places his head on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."

Medical Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had received the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the southern district.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area said additional victims had been transported. One of them was died by Israeli forces while attempting to get assistance to the southern area, health workers reported.

Gaza's health ministry said 25 of the {territ
