Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The speculation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
