The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.

However, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
