Outrage Erupts as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Draws Fierce Rebuke

Personalities from across the partisan divide and the Hollywood world are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the shocking passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Social Media Post

After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on social media to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". In a post, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Arrest

Authorities have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the incident. It is reported his bond was set at a substantial amount.

A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.

“What a appalling and despicable comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the remarks. Goldberg referenced previous rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no decency? Can you get any lower?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a sick man."

Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. So sick."

Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks

Some Republican elected officials also expressed dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and mental health within families.

Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He publicly challenged others in his political party to justify the statements.

The Director's History and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.

"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."

Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation after the shooting of a different individual.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
