Putin Vows Steady Oil Supplies to India in Snub of American Demands

Amid a defiant message to the West, President Vladimir Putin has told PM Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to provide “unbroken” shipments of energy resources to India. This declaration came as the two leaders met in New Delhi and declared their bilateral ties were “resilient to outside influence.”

A Statement Directed at the United States

Putin's comments, made on Friday, appeared to be a pointed rebuke at the United States and its allies, who have sought to urge New Delhi into curtailing its longstanding ties with Moscow. This comes follows previous American measures, such as additional tariffs against Indian goods because of its purchase of discounted Russian crude.

“Our nation is a trustworthy source of energy resources and all required for the development of India’s economy,” he remarked. “Moscow stands willing to persist in guaranteeing the steady supply of energy for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, without mentioning oil explicitly, reinforced the theme by stating that “a stable energy base has been a strong and important cornerstone of the bilateral partnership.”

Questioning Washington's Stance

Prior to the talks, via a TV appearance, Putin had challenged American pressure on India's oil imports. The president questioned, “Should America is entitled to buy our nuclear fuel, why shouldn’t India enjoy the same privilege?”

This trip represented his first trip to India since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, and the two nations undertook a visible show to project that the personal rapport between the two leaders persisted strongly.

A Warm Welcome

Employing an unusual gesture, Modi met Putin right off the plane. The two embraced warmly like close allies before holding a closed-door supper together.

The Indian prime minister later described India's partnership with Russia as “a guiding star” and added it was “built on shared respect and strong faith.”

Reaffirming Bilateral Ties

The bilateral summit produced multiple important deals across defence and economic cooperation. A cornerstone agreement was the signing of an economic cooperation programme aimed at 2030, which aims to double bilateral trade to one hundred billion dollars per year by the target year.

Additionally vowed to recalibrate their strategic cooperation. Although Russia is still India's primary source of defence equipment, its share has reduced over the past decade as India aims to widen its sources.

The official release emphasized cooperation in the co-development of advanced military systems, although specific reference of systems like the Su-57 fighter jet were not made.

Overall, both nations affirmed that during the “current complex, tense, and uncertain geopolitical situation, the Indo-Russian partnership continue to be durable to outside forces.”
