Gus Atkinson increased the injury concerns plaguing England after leaving the field on the second morning of the Boxing Day Test versus the Australians.
The pace bowler experienced discomfort in his hamstring immediately following a delivery that he bowled at the MCG.
The England team stated Atkinson reported "discomfort" and was to take time away from the action for further assessment "during the day".
The concluding match of the series in Sydney begins on Sunday, 4 January.
The English side has previously lost fast bowlers Mark Wood with a knee problem and another paceman with an abdominal strain on the current trip.
A replacement bowler was called up as cover for Wood.
