The direst potential impacts of the climate emergency for the UK have been detailed by researchers, including a searing 4C increase in temperatures to a 2-metre surge in sea levels. An alternative projection envisions a decline of 6C in temperatures following the shutdown of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact food production and energy needs.

These impacts, some of which are associated with climate tipping points, are viewed as low probability but plausible. The scientists said that these scenarios plugged a hole in planning that had left the UK not ready for worst-case results.

"The severe weather events we have mapped aren’t predictions, but they are possible," commented the professor who directed the analysis. "The UK has been making preparations lacking the frameworks to plan for extreme possibilities. We've now provided decision-makers what they need to prepare for future conditions they pray never occur, but can’t afford to ignore."
