Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.
The armed faction invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.
The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.
Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.
Community members disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and vigilante groups" to the area.
A organized locating and saving mission is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.
In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who routinely perform seizures to seek ransom payments or gain negotiating power with authorities.
The incident in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, resulting in households in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they expect and desire their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
