The Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Supported Me Land the Job That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Because my travel mate was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, found a table, and began chatting with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He inquired what I my profession was, and I told him that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an research lab at the university – close to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I should apply for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student walked over to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but right away explained to my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where opportunities abound – she declared: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for three years. A perk of the job was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to reach out at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

What's more, that job in New York led me to a position in Switzerland where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
