The East African nation Receives Valuable Artefacts Following a 100-Year Residence in Germany
Exactly 12 cultural items were ceremoniously restored to Ethiopia following staying by a family in Germany for over 100 years.
The items, originally gathered in the 1920's by Germany's diplomat to the Ethiopian empire Franz Weiss and his spouse his partner, were handed over on Wednesday to the Ethiopian Studies Institute at the university in Addis Ababa.
This assortment contained headpieces, shields and paintings, all regarded as culturally valuable in the country.
"The items still represent a emblem of the enduring and positive connection between the German nation and Ethiopia," remarked Germany's envoy, Germany's representative to the East African country.
Dr. Ramon Wyss, whose father was born during the household's assignment in the nation, delivered the artefacts at a ceremony witnessed by Tourism Minister the tourism official.
He explained that the household's goal to return the treasures was to "display their appeal with the public and safeguard the heritage and history connected to my parent's beginning."
The items were either donations or acquisitions, as stated by the household.
"I would like to thank the Weiss family for concretely demonstrating their deep appreciation for Ethiopia by meticulously safeguarding these artifacts and importantly ensuring their return to their legitimate nation," stated the tourism minister.
She noted that the items would shortly be available to the general audience for research and academic study, describing the action a landmark in protecting Ethiopia's cultural heritage.
"Initiatives persist to bring back ancient objects that are held in the possession of individuals and organizations all over the planet," the minister affirmed.
During colonial rule in Africa, many of historical items were plundered.
The call by nations in Africa for the return of taken items has been answered with some progress in recent years - though a number of artefacts are just on temporary return.
Back in two years ago, Germany was the pioneering nation to repatriate some of the renowned historical items to the West African nation in a bid to deal with its "troubled past."
