The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
