The golfing superstar hails BBC's top sports success with double awards.
Moments before he was crowned, a nervous worry raced through Rory McIlroy's mind. He revealed he was concerned, "Please don't let it be a racing champion again."
"This has been a great night for golf," the champion said. "Our game was recognized in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and perhaps we can use that."
On this occasion, however, there was no last-minute surprise. The verdict was clear, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to reflect on a blockbuster evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were honored as the year's best team.
Constant Motion
Choosing not to attend the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already plotting his immediate plans. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and flown to the UK, he was returning immediately to the sunshine state.
"It's been a whirlwind 24 hours," the golfer noted. "I am anticipating a little bit of a break over Christmas."
Hunger for More
However, McIlroy made clear he has no plans to rest on his laurels, notwithstanding achieving the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a more to give in me," he claimed.
"Additional major championships, order of merit titles, international events, that's great. But if you feel like you can keep improving and have the desire, that's the key."
Collective Honor
Elsewhere, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the squad honor, also lauded golf's remarkable night and his close friend's individual success.
"Those are the moments that will stay with us indefinitely so to get the people's vote for that is truly special," he stated. "Witnessing it Rory pick that up, I think he deserves it so much."
Upon hearing that McIlroy was only the third golfer to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood smiled before joking, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"
Next Targets
He is aiming to finally win his maiden major next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still desires more success. "Provided that you want to be the best you can be, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to work on," he noted.
United Hopes
Before McIlroy left, one final question was raised. As a huge Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be convinced to do it again after his recent triumphs?
"Provided that they quit letting in four goals at home," he replied with a grin. "There is progress. There's a hint of optimism around."
On the back of a remarkable year, it's no wonder that he is focusing on the bright side.
