The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
