In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an bold beginning to his term.

An Unprecedented Figure

The new figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
