US Military Conducts Deadly Strike in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in 4 Deaths
As stated by a high-ranking military spokesperson, the US military executed a lethal strike on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing four individuals.
“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a craft linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was transiting along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were harmed.”
Context and Recent Actions
This announcement follows a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Only on the previous day, the Pentagon said it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Actions Amid Scrutiny
The government has encountered increasing demands to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, saying it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of legal military action.
Although the administration has said the operation is about stopping drugs headed to the US, remarks from a senior aide seemed to suggest a wider political aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”
This indicates the series of strikes may be part of a strategy to oust Venezuela's current leadership.
